Obsession: A Taste for Fear” is a sensual and suspenseful dive into the shadows of Rome’s underground art and fashion scene, a world where beauty and danger intermingle. The film, released in 1988, weaves a tale of psychological intrigue, obsession, and fear with an unmistakably European flair.
The Story
Diane is a fashion photographer portrayed by the illusive Virginia Hey. She is known for her scandalous and bold work. Most, if not all, of her artwork is heavily critiqued or embraced in equal contrast. Things take a drastic turn when pieces of her artwork come to life in the form of her models meeting horrific endings. At this point, the life of Diane is turned upside down.
As the piece progresses, we see Diane diving further into uncovering the novel. She attempts to work together with the artist, Lieutenant Arnold, who is attempting to solve the mystery while evading danger. Consequently, the reality becomes more sinister and the shadows surrounding Diane deepen with each step closer they get to the truth.
Valerie, Diane’s assistant, seems to be hiding some skeletons in her own closet. This casts suspicion on her former lover, Georges (Gérard Darmon), a warped film producer who has the means to commit these horrifying murders. In this high stakes game, who is Valerie? A pawn, a victim, or a player like everyone else?
In her race, she unravels crucial details regarding the killer and his motive. Not only does she reveal the identity of the killer, but she also becomes fully aware of her own deepest yearnings and phobias. Her attempt to uncover the hidden identity takes a toll at first, but as things start to align, other truths get revealed. A world filled with danger and passion takes a toll on his life in a surrealistic manner; Diane has to face the consequences of the voyeuristic nature of his art.
