Plot Summary
Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) lives in Boston, where he works in a hardware store and reads classical novels during the night. He is a reserved, disciplined individual whose past is shrouded in mystery. He is extremely calm, but there is no denying that he was a highly-skilled government assassin.
McCall forms a friendship with Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), a sex worker controlled by the Russian mafia. After her violent pimp beats her, McCall intercedes to secure her release. When that approach fails, he resorts to merciless violence, killing a group of Russian gangsters in seconds.
The attention of Teddy (Marton Csokas), a merciless enforcer sent from Moscow to investigate the murders, is drawn to McCall’s actions. What follows is a deadly cat and mouse scenario with each player trying to outwit the other as McCall goes against the whole Russian syndicate, working to dismantle their operations using his wits, fighting skills, and freedom of creativity along the way.
The movie reaches its peak in a grim, tense fight scene in a hardware store as McCall stops his enemies one by one with nail guns, barbed wire, and a series of traps he sets. When it’s all said and done, he has taken down the Russian assets, served justice, and accepted his as a vigilante equalizer for the weak.
Moreover, the movie covers several themes such as inhumane violence and the ruthlessness of humanity as well as deep moral conflicts.
Justice & Vigilantism
Like the classic lone wolf hero, McCall serves as a vigilante where the law is ineffective. Instead of seeking vengeance, he chooses to fight, making him somewhere in between good and evil.
- Redemption & Second Chances
Despite being a man with a history of strong violence, McCall is able to discover new found meaning in his life by helping others.
- Time & Precision
His obsession with the stopwatch hints at the systematic way in which he approaches things – every action is executed, and attack is calculated to the last detail, perfectly so.
- Literature as a Reflection of McCall’s Journey
McCall takes note of Hemingway’s “The Old Man and The Sea” as it depicts once again a battle he can resonate with – a man fighting a great struggle whilst being isolated with no one willing to offer assistance.

Marton Csokas as Teddy (Nikolai Itchenko)
