Synopsis Expanded – A Haunting Tale from Both Sides
Not only is The Presence a ghost story, but it is also a reflection on human weaknesses. When Chris and Rebecca relocate their family to the suburbs, they expect the change to allow them to address the unresolved conflicts they have: only to get disappointed. These unresolved conflicts are seen in her undisguised favoritism for her son Tyler. At the same time Chloe’s grief for losing her best friend continues to push her into further isolation.
The difference in the film comes from its theme. The Presence which is a ghostly figure tied to the house acts as a narrator for the movie. From its perspective one can see a family that is loved even in confusion without clear understanding of how one’s own life was or why there’s a restriction around the house. The urge to pay attention to Chloe, who appears to be dizzy and has an inability to ignore her feelings of abandonment, is hard to suppress, which the Presence cannot help but feels the need to fulfill.
From doors slamming to objects flying around, these strange events mark the beginning of the escalation of tension within the family. Chloe experiences a feeling of heat which was non-existent before the events: while the Presence is more than willing to offer comfort, the intention to harm were not. These attempts to help happened to sabotage their efforts her sister and the father’s goal of maintaining peace. Rebecca goes overboard, growing paranoid and sensing that chloe is the main cause behind the disturbances. Sibling tensions show with Tyler making fun of Chloe’s exploits leading to further problems for her.
The Presences try tracing more details regarding the family drama, and with it, their memories surface too. Every house has a story to narrate and in this case, the ghost has a history as well, which is equally as horrific as the family’s current dysfunction. While talking about a household, Chloe finds a journal in the attic that propels her to research about the person who lived there earlier, the findings pass for deeper insight potential, but poses threats as well.
The presense enables the family to face their greatest fears, the ghost they allegedly dealt with. As the film reaches its peak, combination of terrifying elements leaves the audience in a stage of uncertainty regarding life after death.
